The ballet that says it all
The timeless classical ballet Swan Lake has almost become a symbol of ballet art. The story—based on a collection of German folk tales about princess Odette, magician Von Rothbart, and the ill-fated prince—has gained achieved enduring popularity, largely due to the evocative music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
While most choreographers adhere closely the original libretto by Vladimir Petrovich Begichev and Vasily Fyodorovich Gelzer, Youri Vámos offers a fresh perspective by delving into the psyche of the prince. Rather than portraying the drama as a dark fairy tale external to the prince, Vámos explores the tragic disposition deeply embedded within Siegfried’s mind.
As in all of Youri Vámos’ ballets, the classical dance in Swan Lake is merely a technical basis. The choreography integrates elements from Petipa and Ivanov's traditional work, with sensitive adjustments to accommodate the new interpretation. Youri Vámos’ version is "contemporary" in the sense of the production’s psychology, revealing and deciphering the symbolic layers of the fairy tale, allowing modern audiences to connect with the profound drama at the heart of Swan Lake.
