NATIONAL MORAVIAN-SILESIAN THEATRE

The National Moravian-Silesian Theatre (Národní divadlo moravskoslezské) is the oldest and largest professional theatre in Ostrava and the Moravian-Silesian Region, Czech Republic. It comprises four companies—opera, drama, ballet, and musical—that perform on three stages: Antonín Dvořák Theatre, Jiří Myron Theatre, and chamber Theatre "12". Each season, NDM opens around 20 productions and stages nearly 500 performances. Renowned for its excellence, NDM is a top Czech theatre institution, recognized with numerous awards and attracting both domestic and international directors, choreographers, soloists, and audiences.

NDM BALLET

The resident ballet company of the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre has been a cornerstone of Ostrava’s cultural life since 1919, making it one of the oldest ballet companies in the Czech Republic. Founded by Italian choreographer Achille Viscusi, its artistic legacy has been shaped by leading dance figures such as Saša Machov, Emerich Gabzdyl, Albert Janíček, and Igor Vejsada.

Under the visionary leadership of Lenka Dřímalová since 2013, the ballet company has evolved into a vibrant and internationally recognized ensemble. It collaborates with world-renowned choreographers, including Jiří Kylián, Ohad Naharin, Itzik Galili, Jo Strømgren, Jiří Pokorný, Youri Vámos, Giorgio Madia, and Justin Peck, bringing diverse and innovative works to the stage.

The ensemble comprises 35 international dancers and 10 permanent guest artists, many of whom have been nominated for the prestigious Czech Thalia Award. The ballet company regularly tours within the Czech Republic and abroad, performing at esteemed venues such as Theater Bonn, Internationale Tanztage Oldenburg, Festival delle Nazioni in Città di Castello, and the Międzynarodowy Festiwal Teatrów Tańca Scena Otwarta. In 2023, the company toured Israel under the name NDM Ballet, further strengthening its global presence.

At its core, NDM Ballet is committed to enriching its home audience while extending its artistry beyond the region. At the same time, it actively fosters connections with the global dance community, sharing its work through collaborations, touring, and festival appearances.
