NATIONAL MORAVIAN-SILESIAN THEATRE

The National Moravian-Silesian Theatre (Národní divadlo moravskoslezské) is the oldest and largest professional theatre in Ostrava and the Moravian-Silesian Region, Czech Republic. It comprises four companies—opera, drama, ballet, and musical—that perform on three stages: Antonín Dvořák Theatre, Jiří Myron Theatre, and chamber Theatre "12". Each season, NDM opens around 20 productions and stages nearly 500 performances. Renowned for its excellence, NDM is a top Czech theatre institution, recognized with numerous awards and attracting both domestic and international directors, choreographers, soloists, and audiences.

The resident ballet company of the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre has been an integral part of Ostrava’s cultural life since 1919, making it one of the oldest ballet companies in the Czech Republic. Founded by Italian choreographer Achille Viscusi, its artistic legacy has been shaped by leading dance figures including Saša Machov, Emerich Gabzdyl, Albert Janíček, and Igor Vejsada.

Over the past thirteen years, under the artistic direction of Lenka Dřímalová, NDM Ballet has developed into a vibrant, internationally oriented ensemble with a broad repertoire spanning classical ballet, neoclassical works, and contemporary dance. The company has collaborated with internationally acclaimed choreographers including Jiří Kylián, Ohad Naharin, Itzik Galili, Jo Strømgren, Jiří Pokorný, Youri Vámos, Giorgio Madia, and Justin Peck. As of the 2026/2027 season, the company now enters a new artistic chapter under the leadership of French-Israeli choreographer and director Léa Bessoudo Greck.

The ensemble brings together 34 international dancers and 10 permanent guest artists, many of whom have received nominations for the prestigious Czech Thalia Awards. NDM Ballet regularly performs throughout the Czech Republic and abroad, appearing at venues and festivals including Theater Bonn, Internationale Tanztage Oldenburg, Festival delle Nazioni in Città di Castello, and the Międzynarodowy Festiwal Teatrów Tańca Scena Otwarta. In 2023, the company also toured Israel, further strengthening its international presence.

NDM Ballet remains committed to combining artistic quality with openness and accessibility. Rooted in tradition while actively engaging with contemporary choreographic voices, the company continues to develop its repertoire, nurture international collaboration, and bring distinctive dance experiences to audiences in Ostrava and beyond.
